About Us
The Alumni Association: Who Are We?
The Toronto chapter of the Vere Technical High School Alumni Association was founded in 1972. There are approximately thirty core members that meet monthly to support our local members, organize functions to raise money for local charities, as well as to fund various projects back at our former high School in Hayes Clarendon Jamaica.
What Do We Do?
- A few of our undertakings include:
- Establishing a dental clinic at the Vere Tech High School and supply equipment and supplies
- Created a fully functioning computer room at the school.
- Refencing the entire perimeter of the school grounds.
- Supplied free standing electric water fountains.
- Replenished the depleted library with thousands of books.
- Provided financial support to the sport teams.
- Currently contribute to the Children's Miracle Network at Toronto Sick Kids Hospital.
- We welcome all past students to join our association so we may continue working to build a better school for the children in the community.
What Can You Do?
- Join the alumni association. It is a $30 annual membership that brings you the newsletter and pride in supporting your school.
- Donate to support the school. Your contribution allows us to continue our work supporting Vere Tech through the scholarship and bursary funds and assisting in restoring the school.
Annual Scholarship
Marsha & Tamara Ottey Scholarship Award
History
This award was established in 1996 and is offered by Vere Technical Alumni Association in memory of Marsha & Tamara Ottey who were slain on August 16, 1995.
This award is offered annually and is intended for a person who has successfully graduated from high school or completing grade 12 and maintaining minimum of B+ average. The recipient should be a promising or exceptional competitor in athletics and must display outstanding behaviour, on and off the field.
The scholarship is worth $816.95, which represents the month, day and year when Marsha and Tamara were taken from us. The award presentation will be made at the Association's annual dinner/dance. To apply, please send a copy of your high school transcript, along with your biography, indicating why you think you should be chosen.
Eligibility
- Open to all Ontario residents
- Graduated from high school by completing grade 12
- Maintain a B+ average
- Exceptional competitor in athletics

Application Deadline/Conditions
The closing date for receipt of your documents is April 30th of each year. Your biography MUST include your name, address, email address, telephone number and confirmation of acceptance or enrollment in a post-secondary educational institution. We appreciate all applications, however, only the successful candidate will be contacted. The successful candidate is expected to attend the Association's annual dinner/dance usually held on the 2nd Saturday in September. Should you be unable to attend, you must inform the Association at (905) 837-8449 at least ten (10) days prior to the scheduled date of the said dinner/dance. If a representative is attending on your behalf, the name of the person should be provided prior to attending.
